Two Researchers from NOVA Chemicals Recognized During TAPPI PLACE Conference

Calgary, Alberta, Canada (April 14, 2016) – Technical Service and Applications Development Specialists Norm Aubee and Dan Ward from NOVA Chemicals Corporation (NOVA Chemicals) have been recognized by TAPPI for their contributions to the flexible packaging industry. They were honored during the 2016 TAPPI PLACE Conference April 11-13 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Aubee was presented with the PLACE Division Leadership and Service Award and Andreas Ahlbrandt Prize. According to TAPPI, this award recognizes Aubee’s outstanding leadership and exceptional service, which has resulted in significant and demonstrable benefits to PLACE Division members.

“Contributing to the PLACE division of TAPPI has been a great opportunity,” said Aubee. “The collaboration with our customers and our peers enables us to positively impact the future of flexible packing.”

Aubee has been a TAPPI member since 2004 and has served as an active member on several committees including the Film Extrusion Short Course Planning Committee and the Film Extrusion Committee, as well as the Products and Resources Team and the PLACE Division Council. He has presented at many TAPPI PLACE conferences and has been instrumental in creating technically relevant and interesting sessions.

Ward, the previous winner of the PLACE Technical Award & Samuel Zweig or Rohm and Haas Prize, was presented the 2014 Best Paper Award for “Improving the Accuracy and Reliability of Model used to Predict Multilayer Packaging Film Properties.” The paper was selected for this award by attendees during the 2014 TAPPI PLACE conference and announced during the 2016 event.

“Multilayer packaging films are increasingly complex and difficult to predict,” said Ward. “Through our research, we are better able to predict barrier properties, which helps our customers reduce development costs and get products to market faster.”

The predictive equations developed during the research were implemented in the company’s Multilayer Property PredictorSM (MPP) tool. This interactive, web-based tool allows customers of NOVA Chemicals to predict several performance attributes of films with up to nine layers, reducing the time and resources needed for them to develop new structures and applications. Future versions of the MPP tool will incorporate additional predictive properties to further enhance customers’ film structure development process.
