NOVA Chemicals Resin Achieves 1,600 psi Hydrostatic Design Basis Rating

Calgary, Alberta, Canada (October 30, 2015) – NOVA Chemicals Corporation (NOVA Chemicals) today announced that the company’s SURPASS® RMs245-U/UG (“RMs245”) resin now meets the hydrostatic design basis (HDB) rating of 1,600 psi at 73ºF (23°C) per ASTM D2837-13e1. This new rating allows significant lightweighting of large tanks without compromising finished part integrity.

An HDB rating is used to determine the optimum wall thickness required for straight walled cylindrical tanks. It is based on a material’s hydrostatic long-term strength, obtained through long-term pressure tests performed on a rotomolded or extruded pipe. RMs245 resin’s HDB of 1,600 psi enables rotomolded tanks of up to 20,000 gallons to be lightweighted or be produced with a better safety margin than tanks molded from resins with a standard 1,250 psi HDB rating.

“The higher HDB rating is critical for driving cost and performance advantages to our large tank customers in the rotational molding market,” said Henry Hay, technical service specialist, NOVA Chemicals. “Reducing wall thickness while maintaining strength will provide our customers with a critical manufacturing advantage.”

RMs245 is a best-in-class polyethylene resin for large rotationally molded parts that require high strength and stiffness such as chemical, agricultural and septic tanks. It is also used in the production of large custom parts and as a replacement for cross-linked PE in specific applications.

For more information about RMs245, visit the Association of Rotational Molders (ARM) 2015 Annual Meeting November 1-4 at the Sheraton Denver Downtown in Denver, CO. NOVA Chemicals is the exclusive Premiere Sponsor and will be highlighting this resin, along with all of its rotational molding capabilities, throughout the conference.
