Call for Expression of Interest to Canadian Researchers

NOVA Chemicals has launched a Call for Expression of Interest targeted for Canadian research institutions in the areas of mechanical recycling, advanced recycling, and microplastics.

Please note the EOI submission period is now closed. Inquiries can be emailed to circularityCOE@novachem.com.

Mechanical recycling is an essential component for enhancing the use of recycled plastics and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We understand the need for advancements not only in current mechanical recycling approaches but also in the development of novel treatment processes.

We are seeking innovative solutions for:

  • Enhancing polyethylene mechanical recycling technologies through advanced sorting and/or improved impurity extraction.
  • Establishing reliable analytical methodologies to validate regulatory and food contact compliance.
  • Elevating the performance and quality of mechanically recycled polyethylene.

Parameters for consideration

  1. This opportunity aims to define research projects for Canadian academic and research institutions, where multi-year research programs are acceptable.
  2. Preference will be granted to strong research groups with applicable capabilities and depth of expertise and experience.
  3. Multiple university and/or multi-disciplinary collaborations are also encouraged.

Advanced recycling technologies offer solutions for  “hard-to-recycle” plastics. We consider these technologies instrumental in closing the loop and addressing the need for minimizing GHG emissions in the circular economy.

We are seeking innovative solutions for:

  • Non-catalytic scission of polyolefins back to their building blocks.
  • Optimizing thermal conversion methods of advanced recycling.

Microplastics have attracted attention in recent years due to growing public inquiry. Although these particles exist as a byproduct of the durability and versatility of plastics, their presence in the environment requires responsible management strategies to be developed and employed.

We are seeking innovative solutions for:

  • Preventing the formation of microplastics.
  • Discovering novel approaches for tracing and capturing microplastics.
  • Developing analytical methods for accurate and reliable detection of microplastics in process streams.

These collaborations are intended to foster enduring relationships, solidified through formal agreements. Researchers from selected organizations may disseminate their findings in academic journals and at conferences with NOVA Chemicals’ written consent, and in turn, NOVA Chemicals will have the opportunity to commercialize the technology, as per the established agreement structures.
