About Us

NOVA Chemicals’ Joffre Site sits on 900 acres and is a world-scale integrated petrochemical complex with over 50 years of operation. It consists of three ethylene and two polyethylene (PE) facilities, employing 800+ permanent staff, around 350 resident contractors, and up to 1,200 contractors during turnarounds.

In 2025, NOVA Chemicals celebrated 50 years in petrochemicals with the decision to build the company’s first ethylene facility (E1) at Joffre. The commissioning of the E1 ethylene cracker was the foundation of building NOVA Chemicals into the leader in the polyethylene production that it is today.

Production & Operations

Joffre Site produces approximately 800 million pounds of energy products and coproducts each year. While a small amount of our ethylene is transported to customers, nearly 70% is used for our polyethylene (PE) manufacturing on-site.

We produce over 3.4 billion pounds of PE annually, including linear low-density PE for use in food packaging, heavy-duty sacks, stretch films and toys, as well as high-density PE used in water bottle and soft drink caps, tanks, pails/crates, pond liners, and recreational and leisure equipment.

Joffre Site is home to our first PE facility to use our Canadian-born, proprietary Advanced SCLAIRTECH™ technology (AST), which enables the development of a broad range of innovative polymers.

Pipeline Operations
NOVA Chemicals operates more than 385 kilometers (km) of pipelines across Alberta, ensuring safe transport of feedstocks and products. We also own, operate, and maintain several smaller-length pipelines adjacent to our facilities.

Rail Operations
Joffre Site operates one of the largest privately-owned industrial railyards in North America with approximately 89 kms of track and capacity to house nearly 2,300 railcars. On average, roughly 60 railcars of product leave our facility each day, at times totaling over 100 during our busiest seasons.
