Community Engagement
Being a Good Neighbour
Two-way communication with our community neighbours is a top priority for NOVA Chemicals. We use a number of methods to share information, collect input, and listen and respond to concerns:
Our SiteLine Community Newsletter is issued twice per year and focuses on Joffre Site, the petrochemical industry, and Responsible Care topics of interest to our Central Alberta communities. Read our latest here.
Our Joffre Site Operations Information Line (J-SOIL) provides information on planned activities such as facility shut down flaring or steam venting, or unplanned process upsets. Call 403.314.2882 to hear current information.
Joffre Site’s Automated Community Notification System contacts all residents within 5km of the site if an operations-related incident has the potential to affect them.
The Joffre Community Advisory Panel (JCAP) is a community representative group that meets with site representatives twice annually to provide external perspectives, identify potential areas of concern, and help communicate with our broader community. JCAP addresses a wide range of topics including operational activities and challenges, growth projects, environmental performance, community concerns, safety, emergency preparedness, contributions, and outreach activities.
Joffre Site also hosts two Open Houses every year, providing opportunities for our neighbours to learn more about our emergency preparedness and have conversations on other topics of interest.
Nature Trail
Opened in 2016, our NOVA Chemicals Community Nature Trail is a 220-acre wildlife area located just north of the Joffre Site for the enjoyment of our community and employees, and to provide a diverse and valuable wildlife habitat in the region. The 5km trail provides an excellent opportunity for people to connect with nature, enjoy scenic viewpoints, and learn about local wildlife and plants.

Community Investment
Investing in our communities is an important part of our socially responsible approach to operations. The United Way Central Alberta is Joffre Site’s charity of choice and has been the top-performing campaign in the region for decades, contributing over $600,000 and more than 1,000 volunteer hours annually.
We are committed to community engagement and strive to be a good neighbour through collaborating and investing in projects that address our communities’ unique needs and concerns. We focus on organizations and causes that:
- Inspire Tomorrow’s Innovators (STEM, trades, education)
- Create Strong, Thriving Communities (basic needs, safety, health)
- Foster Environmental Stewardship
We can’t wait to learn more about your organization, program, or initiative. Please review our eligibility criteria before you submit an application for funding.
