NOVA Chemicals Achieves New Certification for Post Consumer Recycled Content at SYNDIGO1 in Connersville, Ind.
Calgary, AB, CANADA (May 1, 2025) – NOVA Chemicals Corporation (“NOVA Chemicals”) today announced that its polyethylene film mechanical recycling facility in Connersville, Ind., has achieved the Recycled Material Standard (RMS) certification from GreenBlue. This third-party certification verifies that the SYNDIGO™ brand recycled polyethylene produced at the facility is 100% post-consumer recycled content.
The comprehensive RMS’s certification process is earned through a rigorous series of audits and supply point verifications. With this certification, the RMS confirms that NOVA Chemicals’ Connersville facility meets all necessary requirements to trace feedstock to finished products.
“The RMS certification is the latest achievement for the SYNDIGO1 facility, and it underscores NOVA Chemicals’ commitment to advancing circular solutions and sustainable packaging for flexible plastics,” said Greg DeKunder, vice president of NOVA Circular Solutions, a business of NOVA Chemicals. “Beyond meeting RMS’ stringent traceability requirements, our customers can trust that they are receiving high performing post-consumer recycled polyethylene.”
“The expertise and quality mindset that NOVA Chemicals has delivered for over 50 years for polyethylene is now being applied to recycled polyethylene. Our goal is to set a new standard in PE film recycling and the production of recycled PE in the industry, and this RMS certification is the latest example of this effort,” DeKunder continued.
More about SYNDIGO1 in Connersville
• The 450,000 sq.ft. SYNDIGO1 facility in Connersville leverages a state-of-the-art design and world-class equipment to produce high performing recycled polyethylene resins made from post-consumer films.
• The plastic film collected from retail and distribution centers will be processed into pellets and sold as NOVA Chemicals’ SYNDIGO™ recycled linear, low-density polyethylene (rLL/LDPE) with an estimated production of over 100 million lbs. annually by 2026. This is equivalent to 145,000 bales of end-of-life plastic film that will be reprocessed and not placed in landfill.
• Two of four lines are in operation, and we expect the facility will be fully operational by the end of 2025.
• In 2024, NOVA Chemicals’ mechanical recycling process received a Letter of Non-Objection (LNO) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirming that the SYNDIGO1 facility has the ability to produce post-consumer rLLDPE that is suitable for food-contact applications.
