NOVA Chemicals promotes clean energy at Painesville

Pittsburgh, PA (June 15, 2010) – NOVA Chemicals Corporation today announced a new clean energy program at its Painesville, Ohio manufacturing location.

The program, which uses landfill gas as a fuel source, is aligned with the new Ohio EPA solid waste management plan that establishes reduction and recycling goals for Ohio and its 52 solid waste management districts.

“We’re proud to be investing in the sustainable benefits of landfill gas and helping the state of Ohio to become a leader in waste reduction and recycling efforts,” stated Brian Fedor, Site Leader for NOVA Chemicals’ Painesville manufacturing location.

An alternate fuel source generated by the decomposition of municipal waste, landfill gas contains methane which can easily be recovered and used the same as electricity or natural gas.  This initiative will significantly offset the amount of natural gas used at the Painesville facility – equating to the amount of energy used by up to 160 homes per year.

In cooperation with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, NOVA Chemicals developed a permit to allow the use of landfill gas to fire the steam boilers at the site.  Once fully optimized, the system will reduce conventional natural gas use by more than 60%, conserve a valuable natural resource and improve local air quality by eliminating the emissions associated with flaring of the landfill gas.

Located approximately 30 miles northeast of Cleveland, Ohio, NOVA Chemicals’ Painesville site manufactures 85 million pounds of expandable polystyrene (EPS) resins annually for use in the construction and packaging industries.
