Sustainability

At NOVA Chemicals, we believe that a sustainable business is a profitable and socially responsible business. We endorse the definition of sustainability developed by the United Nations: Sustainable Development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

We are committed to continual improvement in all three components of sustainability: environmental, social and economic.

Environment — We believe that sound environmental stewardship and careful management of our natural resources are fundamental to a sustainable business.

Social — We develop and manufacture products that deliver value to our customers and make everyday life safer, healthier and easier.

Economic — We create economic value for our stakeholders. We provide jobs, purchase goods and services and pay taxes in our communities. In addition, we donate approximately one percent of our pre-tax profits in the communities where we operate and live.

  • We are investing in energy-efficiency projects and reducing greenhouse gas emissions at our manufacturing facilities.
  • We are committed to helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals by developing innovative polymers and products that create less waste through raw material source reduction and deliver energy efficiency.
  • We adhere to strict product stewardship standards that limit the impact our products have on the environment.

We create durable building and construction products that save energy — limiting the environmental footprint of homes and buildings made from our products. These include:

We apply proprietary technology to our portfolio of polymers and products to help our customers reduce their environmental impact. Our products provide energy efficient benefits for a wide range of applications. These include:

ARCEL® Advanced Foam Resin reduces waste by protecting damage-sensitive goods with less material — minimizing the impact on the environment. Since less packaging material is used, package size can be reduced by as much as 50 percent and a positive domino effect is created. Each area within the supply chain consumes less energy and resources. Loading more packages in a shipping container, truckload and pallet translates into significant cost savings and the environmental benefit of lowering fuel consumption and emissions.

Altra Cups featuring IMx Technology are a better environmental alternative than paper cups. Polystyrene food packaging has less impact on the environment than paper alternatives. Additional information is available from the Franklin Study: A lifecycle analysis of polystyrene foam and paper products.

Polyethylene Food Packaging: Our polyethylene food packaging resins minimize waste by reducing the amount of material needed in packaging through downgauging. Read more in our latest food packaging case study.

Additionally, polystyrene food packaging is a safe and environmentally responsible alternative compared to coated paperboard products. Read the latest information from the American Chemistry Council about the benefits of polystyrene food packaging.

Industry Resources on Sustainability: There are many resources available regarding the environmental impact of plastics in comparison to competing materials such as paper or glass. In many instances, the environmental impact of plastic products is less than that of alternative materials.
