Today's flexible packaging films must meet a variety of demanding performance, aesthetic, and cost requirements. A key performance target for perishable foods is the film's permeability to oxygen and moisture vapor. If these permeabilities are not within a specific range, the food product quality will deteriorate quickly.  

Designing coextruded films that either maximize the barrier or have specific permeabilities can be a significant challenge requiring numerous calculations.
