UPESTM resin focuses on thermoforming and compounding markets

Marking its launch with two seminar presentations, UPES resin made its official debut at NPE 2009. An innovative reactor grade resin (polyethylene and polystyrene combination), UPES resin enables significant source reduction while increasing performance and maintaining cost.

Its bi-functional versatility offers enhanced compatibility with various polymer systems and broadens the processing window of most polyolefins. A product of QinnexTM technology, UPES resin provides the following properties to users:
  • Variable ratio of the two polymers
  • Different types of polyethylene can be used
  • Can add different co-monomers
  • Ability to vary amount of cross-linking
  • Two phases are compatibilized 'in situ'

The seminars focused on two markets - compounding and thermoforming.

Thermoforming - a case study
Tray-Pak Corporation was experiencing significant warpage, inefficient processing and poor material distribution in one of their thermoforming applications. They were looking for a cost-effective and sustainable solution that would allow them to achieve a better performing, more sustainable product - without increasing cost. View more details in the full case study.

Through a collaborative effort with NOVA Chemicals (the resin supplier) and Primex Plastics(the sheet producer) — Tray-Pak was able to create a part that delivered a balance of performance and cost while meeting their own sustainability objectives.
  • >200% increase in crush strength
  • 33% faster forming rates
  • 20% material source reduction
  • Enhanced part definition
  • Fully recyclable part
  • Shorter start-ups
  • Reduced scrap rates
  • Increased machine time availability

Compounding - technical introduction
When used in compounding applications, UPES resin delivers a wide range of property enhancements which may include:
  • Material source reduction
  • Enhanced processability
  • Modified flow
  • Improved foamability
UPES resin allows compounders to design novel combinations of polymers and composites that deliver a balance of performance and cost along with material source reduction and energy savings. View product property charts online.
