Resume & Interviewing Tips

Your resume is a selling tool that highlights your education, skills, accomplishments and experience. To prepare a successful resume, you need to know how to summarize and effectively present your experiences and achievements.

Here are some tips on writing your resume:

  • Target your resume content to match the needs identified in our job posting. Be concise, using point form, while keeping your points to one or two lines long with a maximum of five points per section.
  • Include key dates for education and work experience, and ensure you present these dates in reverse chronological order.
  • Focus on your past results and accomplishments that relate specifically to the role you are applying for. Avoid generalized statements that do not provide detail or background, as well as outdated or irrelevant information.
  • Start each point with an action verb for impact.
  • Use spell check, but do not rely solely on it! Read through and review your resume for spelling or grammatical errors.
  • Use no more than two font styles on a page. Job title, organization, location and dates should be in the same order and the same font style throughout your resume.
  • Format your resume consistently (ex. Number of spaces between sections).
  • Be sure that the text does not appear crowded, by ensuring the text is balanced with the white space on the page.
  • Keep your resume to no more than two pages, with the most important information appearing on the first page. If you have a one-page format, the most important information should be shown at the beginning of the resume.
