NOVA Chemical's New Grad Rotation Program

NOVA Chemicals offers a rotational program to provide new grads with responsibilities and challenges early in their career. Here is an example of a typical rotation:

Rotation 1

Manufacturing Infrastructure Technical Services – Small Project Management Role (6 months)

In this role, I was able to experience being a member of the Manufacturing Infrastructure Technical Services Team (think capital projects for our site utilities plant). One of the projects that I focused on allowed me to design and execute an experiment for our site potable water system. This gave me a great opportunity to see how plans in the office come to life in the plant. It also allowed me to spend some time in the unit and work alongside members of the operations team.

Rotation 2

PE1 Pelletizer – Contact Engineering Role (8 months)

This role took me to the Polyethylene 1 Plant and my first unit role. It was like stepping into a different world! Here, the first priority is to keep the plant running in a safe and productive manner. This role gave me the opportunity to work with some pretty fascinating equipment, where my trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills were put to the test. It also gave me great field experience and the fortune to work closely with operations and maintenance. This was especially true when I was able to assist with a month-long turnaround where the entire plant was shut down for maintenance activities. In addition to spending time in the unit, I also learned about our product slate, customer interactions, and what it takes to be competitive in such a demanding industry.

Rotation 3

Project Management – Corporate Engineering Standards (3 months)

This role brought me back into the office with an introduction into the corporate world of NOVA Chemicals. In this position, I met many of the project managers and corporate specialists that reside on site, but spend time working on projects for both Manufacturing West and Manufacturing East. My main focus during this rotation was on improving and updating our corporate engineering standards. It was a great opportunity to become familiar with industry codes and standards, as well as NOVA Chemical's own.

Final Placement

 Manufacturing Infrastructure Rotating Equipment Specialist

Midway through my final new grad role, an opportunity came up for a rotating equipment specialist in our Manufacturing Infrastructure unit. My responsibilities include providing technical support for day-to-day issues and unit projects related to rotating equipment. In this role, I work closely with maintenance and also support reliability initiatives. This role was of interest to me early on in my career at NOVA, and I feel it is a great fit moving forward.

This program is about opportunity and the mentorship is second-to-none. It gives you the chance to experience different roles, units, and teams across site. Along the way you will be faced with different responsibilities, challenges, and successes. Not only does it teach you what NOVA Chemicals is all about, but you also learn what is important to you in your career. It is a great way to find the best fit for you and NOVA Chemicals.
