NOVA Chemicals introduces FX550 advanced styrenic polymer

High-impact and high-gloss polymer is a value-added alternative to ABS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Pittsburgh, PA (January 22, 2003) - NOVA Chemicals today announced the commercialization of a new advanced styrenic polymer. Designated FX550, the polystyrene resin offers high-impact and high-gloss properties for applications such as small appliances and housewares. Because it has high melt flow characteristics, is easily colored at the press and does not require drying, FX550 is easier to process than Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS).

?FX550 provides molders and end-users high-gloss, toughness, scuff resistance and environmental stress crack resistance ? all at a lower total cost than ABS,? said Holly Wilson, NOVA Chemicals? Market Director of Durable Applications. ?In addition, the material is easier to process, resulting in lower material, energy and labor costs.?

The first applications of the new FX550 are refrigerator shelves and office supplies, which exhibit excellent high-gloss aesthetics and durability. Other potential applications include vacuum cleaner housings, toys, kitchen and bath accessories, cosmetic packaging and point-of-purchase displays.

FX 550 is the newest grade in a family of impact-modified polystyrene resins, all featuring superior toughness. They are currently available in North America and Europe.
