Today, Responsible Care is practiced in over 50 countries and seeks to align with society’s expectations and aspirations for economic, social and environmental sustainability.
NOVA Chemicals promotes Responsible Care and its commitment to sustainability as cornerstone to our culture. Sustainability is rooted in the founding principles of Responsible Care which focus on safety, health and the environment. Today sustainability is also fundamentally about creating shared value through collaboration, innovation and stakeholder engagement. It recognizes our interdependencies and challenges us to apply life-cycle management to our decisions and actions and to use our influence to better society and the environment.
We support the original 1987 United Nations Brundtland Commission definition which describes sustainability as the ability to develop in ways that meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We also support the triple bottom line (TBL) approach that balances economic, social and environment considerations for actions and decisions.
NOVA Chemicals’ commitment to sustainability is expressed and operationalized through our commitment to Responsible Care and the newly updated “Responsible Care Ethic & Principles for Sustainability” of the Chemical Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) and the Responsible Care Guiding Principles of the American Chemistry Council (ACC).
Our view of social responsibility recognizes the importance of aligning our decisions and actions with the interests and concerns of others inside and outside the organization through open communication, feedback and collaboration.
Recognizing that social concerns and aspirations are continually evolving, we provide active leadership to our industry associations and communities so that the original ideals of Responsible Care continue to transform to support society’s shared concerns for social, economic and environmental sustainability.
