Calgary, Alberta, Canada (August 16, 2018) – Jonathan Quinn, markets development manager for the polyethylene performance films group, has been named a 2018 “Rising Star” by Plastics News magazine. The publication’s “best-in-the-industry” program, in its fifth year, honors millennials under 35 years old who are “doing amazing work, solving the industry's problems and working on cutting-edge technology.”
Quinn, who joined NOVA Chemicals in 2016, was nominated by Dan Falla, a respected technical expert in the polyethylene industry. Falla credits Quinn’s “infectious passion for plastics and packaging” that allowed him to have such a significant impact on the industry so early in his career.
Quinn traces his success to an early interest in plastics and his lineage. “I have pictures of me in a box of resin when I was two, and my dad and grandfather both worked in the industry,” he explained. “Plastics and packaging are literally and figuratively in my blood.”
For much of the past year, Quinn has been promoting high-performance sustainable packaging for the e-commerce supply chain. He believes that as a millennial who grew up in the digital age, he brings a unique perspective that is critical to understanding and communicating how e-commerce is transforming packaging requirements. “Over the next two decades, we’ll see brand owners working to convert to 100 percent recyclable packaging,” said Quinn. “This will challenge the industry in ways we’ve never seen before. We have a responsibility to make this world a better place than when we got here, so we need to continue working towards recyclable products that are healthier, easier and safer.”
Greg DeKunder, vice president of marketing, polyethylene business, NOVA Chemicals, is happy to see Quinn selected for this accolade. “I’m pleased that Plastics News has recognized Jonathan for his passion and expertise,” DeKunder said. “Jonathan is a great spokesperson to illustrate our commitment to customer-driven innovation, exceptional products, and sustainability.”
On Sept. 1, Quinn will join the board of directors of the Society of Plastics Engineers’ Flexible Packaging division, which provides a forum for the exchange of technical knowledge and business information. He also currently chairs the AMERIPEN Ecommerce Packaging Committee. Appointed in March 2018, Quinn leads the working group in informing and directing potential legislative strategy toward proactive solutions for the e-commerce market.
This fall Quinn is scheduled to speak on the implications of e-commerce on packaging and plastics at several key industry conferences:
